A bucket list only helps if some of it actually happens. Open GoalTracker, press Restore at the top of the tracker and pick the .json file. Each item becomes a subgoal you can break into small steps and check off.
The Word button works with an empty form too: it saves a blank bucket list template (.docx) for Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
Want a blank one to fill in by hand? Download the PDF: A4 or US Letter. Free to reuse with credit (CC BY 4.0). What is on the sheet and how to print it: A4 guide, US Letter guide.
How to make a bucket list in five steps
- Set a timer for ten minutes and write everything you would regret never doing. Do not judge yet.
- Sort what you wrote into the four categories above. A gap in one category is a prompt, not a failure.
- Cut anything you wrote because it sounds impressive rather than because you want it.
- Give a rough "by when" to the three items that matter most. A year is enough.
- Pick one and write a first step you can do this week, like booking, asking or saving a first amount.
Example: a filled bucket list with first steps
| Category | Item | By when | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel | See the northern lights | 2027 | Price a February week in TromsΓΈ |
| Travel | Take a solo trip abroad | Next summer | Pick the city and open a savings pot |
| Experiences | Run a half marathon | Spring 2027 | Run 3 km twice this week |
| Experiences | Learn to surf | - | Book one beginner lesson |
| Growth | Learn conversational Spanish | 2028 | 15 minutes a day for 30 days |
| Growth | Write a short book | - | Write 300 words on Sunday morning |
| Health & relationships | Hike a mountain with my dad | 2027 | Ask him which one |
| Health & relationships | Cook my grandmother's recipe from memory | - | Cook it once with her written notes |
Not every item needs a date. The first step column is the one that matters: it is small enough to do this week, so the list starts moving.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a bucket list?
Write fast first: ten minutes, no judging, anything you would regret never doing. Then sort the items into a few categories, cut the ones you only wrote because they sounded impressive, and add a rough "by when" to the few that matter most. Finally, give one item a first step you can do this week.
How many things should be on a bucket list?
There is no right number. Twenty to fifty is common and is enough to cover travel, experiences, growth and people without turning into a list you never read. The template starts with five rows per category and lets you add up to ten.
Is there a printable or Word bucket list template?
Yes. Download the blank PDF in A4 or US Letter to fill in by hand, or the blank Word file (.docx), which opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice. You can also fill the list in on this page and print it or download it as Word with your items in it.
How do I actually complete my bucket list?
Pick one item, not ten, and give it a date and a first step small enough to do this week. Treat it like any other goal: break it into milestones and check in on it. Download the .json file to track the items in GoalTracker, where each one becomes a goal step you can tick off.
Ready to start on one item? Plan it with the goal planning worksheet or the printable goal tracker. Picking a few for this year? The New Year's resolution template gives each one a January milestone. To sort a wider wish list by life area first, try the dream list template.
