Example: a filled goal tracker
Goal: Run a half marathon. Why: To prove to myself I can finish something hard this year.
| # | Milestone | Done |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run 5 km without stopping | โ |
| 2 | Sign up for a race in the spring | โ |
| 3 | Run 10 km in training | โ |
| 4 | Run 16 km in training | โ |
| 5 | Finish the half marathon (21.1 km) | โ |
2 of 5 done. Each milestone is something you can finish and tick off; the last one is the goal itself.
How to use this goal tracker template
Write the goal as an outcome you can check off, like "Run a half marathon", not a wish like "get fit". Adding why it matters helps on the weeks when motivation drops.
Then list the milestones that lead there, in order, from the first small step to the finish line. Two to five milestones is usually enough; the page fits up to eight. Give a milestone a date only if a deadline actually helps you.
Tick milestones off as you finish them and the counter above shows how far along you are. Nothing is saved on this page, so print or download it before you close the tab.
Frequently asked questions
What should a goal tracker template include?
The goal written as an outcome you can check off, a line on why it matters, and the milestones that lead to it, each with a tick box and an optional date. A count of milestones done shows how far along you are. This template has all of that and fits up to 8 milestones.
Is this goal tracker template free?
Yes. There is no account and no email. Fill it in on the page and print it, download it as Markdown, or download a blank PDF in A4 or US Letter to fill in by hand. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How many milestones should one goal have?
Two to five is usually enough. Fewer than two and there is nothing to tick off for weeks; more than eight and the goal is probably two goals. Order them from the first small step to the finish line.
Can I track the goal on my phone instead of on paper?
Yes. Download the .json file and import it in the free GoalTracker app with the Restore button at the top of the tracker. Each milestone becomes a subgoal you tick off, and your progress stays saved in that browser.
