A mandala chart is a 9x9 grid: one core goal in the centre, 8 pillars around it, and 8 actions under each pillar. The first set of mandala chart examples covers a marathon, a career change and a side business. These three cover goals that come up more often: passing an exam, getting stronger, and saving a fixed amount.

Each example shows the core goal, the 8 pillars, and 3 sample actions per pillar so you can see the level of detail. A real chart has 8 actions per pillar; the free mandala chart template gives you the full grid to fill in, and there is a blank A4 PDF and US Letter PDF if you prefer paper.

How to fill in your own

  1. Write the core goal with a finish line. "Pass the exam" is vague; "75% on 12 December" can be checked.
  2. Name 8 pillars. About half should be the skill itself and half support: sleep, money, people, place.
  3. Write actions you could do this week. If one would take months, it belongs in the pillar column instead.
  4. Choose one pillar to start. Do not try all 64 actions at once.

Turn the grid into something you track

A grid on its own is a plan, not progress. Put the core goal in GoalTracker as a goal, add each of the 8 pillars as a subgoal with a due date, and break the first pillar into microgoals. The progress bar then shows how far along you are, and the weekly view shows what is next. For more grids, see the first set of mandala chart examples, or how to break down a big goal into subgoals if you want the same idea without a grid.
